P2. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT FIT INTO CURRENT TRENDS

I personally think that my product will fit into the current marketplace as The Grumpy Muffin is slightly similar to Adventure Time in terms of narrative and animation style and Adventure time seems to have made a big impact in children and even teenagers and its rated 8.7/10.
The Powerpuff Girls have also made an impact as there's three main characters, the strong one, the leader and the sweet one and we could categorise Ridley, Oliver and Carlos. Carlos being the strong one, Ridley the sweet one and Oliver being the leader.
Its slightly different to some of the stuff thats made nowadays as the main character is a muffin which is a food type and you don't really see that in cartoon, you're more likely to see humans or animals but not often you get to see a muffin. Most people like muffins making it more likeable for children and more entertaining due to the fact that they have probably never seen a talking muffin with a top hat and a moustache.
The main girl is called Ridley which was made as a mixture of Venellope and Agne and she's a shy and very quiet girl who's friendly and sweet yet stubborn, this could fit into the current place as most young girls are like this and even teenagers.
The themes of friendship, love, zombie apocalypse and so on will be shown but blood or uncomfortable scenes will never been shown. This will appeal to both genders as girls love the theme of friendship and so do boys and there is also some zombie apocalypse which will get the attention of mor male to female stereotypically speaking.
The grumpy muffin fits with the current trends but at the same time it includes new things is such as the fact that the main character is a muffin.
I would like to show this product on Cartoon Network as many well known series are being shown there.
It would be on the screen from 16.00-16.30 therefore children will be back from school and most of them will be watching Tv before its dinner time, then again at 18.00-18.30 which means children would have finished dinner and maybe even done their homework which shouldn't take long as theyre young then they could watch TV again.
Also as it shows at half 6 means that teenagers could watch it too as they would be back from college.

P2. TARGET AUDIENCE

Target Audience:

Age: 10
Gender: male
Name: Daniel

He is interested in videogames and also going out to the park to play with his friends. He will start school next year which will mean that him and his friends will talk about tv series such as the grumpy muffin which will help the series promote.
He goes to bed at 8pm but he is allowed to read his own book until 9pm which helps him get to sleep a lot quicker.
He plays tennis after school every tuesday with his friend Kyle, he also goes on bike rides with his mum on the weekends if the weather its good, if its not then he will stay indoor watching tv with his parents or playing videogames such as Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

He gets home then plays with his brother until dinner time, then after dinner he sits on the sofa and watches Adventure Time, Sponge Bob, Regular Show and The Amazing World Of Gumball.
He enjoys Adventure Time more than any of the other series above as he finds Jake really funny as he farts and always jokes around with Finn.
He plays on his tablet, mainly Pet Rescue, Minecraft and Knights and Dragons, and sometimes he watches vines too.

The animation will appear to Daniel because it will have the same humor as Adventure Time and The grumpy muffin and Ridley go on adventures. There is also a lot of action and fights between Oliver (the grumpy muffin) and Carlos (the baddie)
He will also like it because its entertaining and the characters are also quite odd such as the grumpy muffin with a top hat and so on.He gets money sometimes which he then spends on sweets at the corner shop but he gets quite a lot for christmas and his birthday.

P2. REPRESENTATION AND ETHICS IN CARTOONS

He believes Rio is problematic as there are a few hints or racism throughout the film and even throughout some of the disney films.
You can see this by how the main characters are white such as Anna Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and Jemaine Clement. Then the character who are slightly more tanned go after them in terms of importance then the darkest at the bottom which shows racism really clear even if its not visible in the film.

PEP's
Problem Contexts, Entertainment Contexts and Performer Contexts.
Meaning that its racist that black people have a role in a film as a 'normal' character and that they should play an important role in the film even if they are not the hero, that what Dr.Charles Da Costa has found out as a British lecturer.

They go for the safe option which is stereotypes, meaning that whenever you think of a mexican you imagine a guy, a tanned guy wearing a sombrero and maybe a moustache.

He says that it seems like social mobility is only allowed to white people.

Voice Over

Voice Over:

The character im doing the voice over is the protagonist The Grumpy Muffin who is very grumpy, anti-social, lazy, sarcastic, funny and very neat.

The 3 qualities the character must have is a clear voice so its easy to understad, have an american accent and the kind of tone that gives away how grumpy he is.

My dream cast for the Grumpy muffin would be Robert Downey Jr because his voice its quite deep and i think he could do a great grumpy voice.
He is mostly know for playing as Iron Man but he's been in some other great films such as Sherlock holmes , Gothika, Tropic Thunder, Due Date and The Avengers.

This is Don Rickles who did the voice for Mr. Potatohead in Toy story and i believe he suits the character well and could easily do a grumpy voice for the grumpy muffin.

P2. STORY AND STORYBOARDS

Animation Process Flowchart

1. Idea, brief, treatment, Script and Production Planning.

To create an animation first of all you need a brief idea of what its going to be about to be able to develop that idea later on. You need to do a script to make sure you know and show what the characters are like and what the storyline of the animation is.
You will also need to know roughly what the budget is going to come up to to get a rough idea of how much its going to cost.

2.Concept Design

This is something which is done during the pre-production of the animation. This is done to illustrate the narrative and it gives a chance to the animators to play around with the characters and thei personalities.

3.Storyboarding

The storyboard is where the director and the storyboard artist or artists sit together to decide how the want the stort to be shown. For example if something awful has just happened the director might want a close up of one of the characters to show emotion.
The storyboard shows how the narrative flows (continuity) along with the shot type and short description of what is going on in the shot.
The smoother and more detailed it is the better and easier it will be later on into the project.

4.Production Design and Visual Development

This is where the Production Designer and/or Art director will create the type of animation for the characters and also for the setting.

5.Recording the Dialogue

This is where the Producer and the Director will cast the voices. Ofter the actors will like to have a read through the storyboard to get to know their character more and get to see what they look like so they have a better and more professional idea of what their voice might sound like which is really helpful.

6. Building the Models, Rigging

This is where modellers will transfer the drawings into CG which will allow the animator to move the stuff around to get an idea of what he/she wants to do with the characters and props used in the scene.

7. Layout Animatics

In 2D and CG the layout is different as they are not the same even though the aim of this is the same, to get all the cameras set up.
You know what the layout should look like thanks to the storyboard, so like i've said before the smoother and more detailed it is the better and easier it will be later on.
On larger CG there are often two layouts, the Rough one and the Final one.

8. Animation

The Director or Animated Director will assign the animator or animators to work on the scene and animate it. Sometimes there is only one animator which means it might take longer as he/she has to do everything.
This is where you put everything together, the shots from the storyboards, the characters, the props, the voice recordings and the setting.

9. Final Background and Colouring

In Stop Frame the background has been done before the animation and this is designed by the Art Director.
in 2D paper animation if often scanned into a computer and cleaned before its being coloured using one of the softwares for it.
Depending on the style some art work is still getting done by hand and presented by hand too.

10. Lighting and Composition

The lighting and composition is a very important step in animation as you have to decide what you want the set to look like. For example if its an animated tv series for children you would expect the setting to be really bright to stand out and get their attention.
This is where backgrounds and effects are combined together.

11. Post Production

This is mainly where all the sound gets combined and put together such as the score (music/soundtrack) sound effects and so on to create the set more realistic and give an atmosphere. This is linked to the action happening in the scene.

Coming up with ideas

Format:
Tv series for kids

Overarching situation:
Lena The Muffin left Oliver White AKA Grumpy Muffin without giving him any explanation whatsoever. He is a writer, he spends his time sitting on his rocking chair by the window writing poetry until this little girl. Ridley moves into the neighbourhood and tries to be friends with him which changes his life around as no one ever speaks to him after his wife left him and he locked himself inside.

Setting:
As they go on adventures the setting tends to be different and mainly a made up world. The adventures will mostly start in the village where he and the little girl live.

Main Characters:
Grumpy muffin is the main one who has a white cat which is filled with milk.
The little girl is called Riley which is also a main character.

Supporting Characters:
Jack is Oliver's enemy which lives across the street, he is also an old character and they tend to play pranks on each other. They used to be best friends back in school when they were young but stuff got in the way.

Target Audience:
Mainly for children from 6 to 12 years old but it might appeal to teenagers as some adult themes will be included in the series too along with sarcasm which children wouldn't understand.

P2. REGULATORY BODIES - BBFC

 What is the BBFC?
BBFC stands for – British Board of Film Classification

What does BBFC regulates?
Moving images such as films, video/DVD and also they regulate video games and a service provider for new and developing media.

Who founds it?
Film producers pay money to the BBFC Company to get certificates. Film producer needs certificate to be able to make films.

What do the different classifications mean?

U- Universal (for everyone) For audience four aged or older. Not violence, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour or discrimination, nudity, sex, bad language, theme or nudity.

PG- Parental guidance. Unlikely to have any sort of discrimination. Only drugs to make a suitable anti-drug message.
Not allowed to have any horror sequences, shouldn’t be prolonged or intense.
Not any imitable behaviour that children can copy.
Language only mild bad language.
Natural nudity with no seal content.
Sex is only allowed to be implied but not allowed to show any parts or have a sex sequence.
Violence with no detail at all may be allowed.

12 12A
12 years old and over. No one younger than12 may see a 12A film in the cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified 12A are not recommended for a child below 12.

Discrimination language is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
Drugs if they use drugs in their sequence should not give instructional detail if used.
Horror moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted.
Imitable behaviour should be quite sensible as a 12 year old could copy such as hanging or suicide.
Language is allowed. But the use of strong language such as ‘fuck’ should not be used.
Nudity is allowed too but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.
Sexual activity may be allowed but it should be briefly and discreet.
Themes are acceptable, but it should be suitable for young teenagers.
Violence is allowed but it shouldn’t be in much detail. No blood is allowed.

15
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.
Drugs taking may be shown but it should not encourage them to do it. Aerosols or solvents is unlikely to be acceptable.
Horror, strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.
Imitable behaviour such as hanging and suicide and self-harming should not dwell on detail which could be copied.
Language, the strongest word you can use is ‘fuck’ but aggressive and repeated use of strongest language is unlikely to be used.
Nudity may be allowed.
Sexual activity may be allowed but not allowed to go into much detail
Theme is allowed for audience over 15.
Violence may be strong should not dwell on the infliction of pain injury.

 18
For only adults. Safer sex and health, explicit images of sexual activity may be permitted.
Sex works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation. Containing clear images of real sex, strong fetish material, sexually explicit animated images, or other very strong sexual images will be confined to the ‘R18’ category.

‘R18’
Penetration by any object associated with violence or likely to cause physical harm.
Any sexual threats, humiliation or abuse, which does not form part of clearly consenting role- playing game. Strong physical or verbal abuse, even if consensual is unlikely to be acceptable.

What pays for the film classification?
The producer.

Why do you think it was set up?
It was set up for the audience’s protection. For example a 6 year old should be allowed to watch the same kind of films that a 18 year old could watch. And any type of violence would encourage him or give him ideas of doing it, such as hanging, stabbing people etc..

Do we need a BBFC? How successful do you think the BBFC is?
In my opinion the BBFC is really successful as when I go to the cinema to watch a film for 15 year old or older they always ask me to bring my passport or any kind of evidence to prove that im 15 or older. Also it was a good idea because a 15 year old is not as mature as a 18 year old.
Try to find an example where the BBFC have rejected film/game/text. Why was this?

Coraline

Coraline is kind of like a horror for kid but they seem to enjoy it. They have settled for a PG because not everyone could watch it such as 3 years old for example.
The fact that there are creepy dolls and dark setting could give them nightmares as they are not aware that its not real and they'll get scared of being alone. Therefore if they watch it with their parents they will feel more secure and comfortable.
Its not a 12A as its got no swearing in it whatsoever, also its got no violence at all therefore it narrows it down to a PG.

Ideas for The Grumpy Muffin

 1                                                  2

3
I changed the colour of the mussing and also the eyebrows, wrapper and nose. I though that he second picture was better because of the brown tone. It makes him look old which the impression i wanted to give him. Even though this is not my final idea its a good start as im thinking about maybe give him so arms and instead of glasses a

Muffin ideas 2

This is probably the Grumpy Muffin I am going to use for the final character, the one in the middle as the colour looks more serios yet casual.
